EXCLUSIVE: Composers Salim-Sulaiman reveal the connection between soundtrack of the film Dor and Chak De! India

Over the years, music composers Salim-Sulaiman have managed to become one of the most revered names in the Hindi film music. From Chak De! India, Fashion to Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Band Baaja Baaraat and much more, the Merchant brothers have come a long way creating smash hit music albums for numerous Bollywood films; for over decades now.

In an exclusive music room interview with Bollywood Hungama, while sharing the interesting behind-the-scenes stories of how they created their chart-buster scores, the musical duo also revealed the connect between soundtrack of the film Dor and Chak De! India. During the conversation, Salim revealed how the song “Maula Mere” from Chak De! India was created just a week before the film’s release.

Salim recalled, “When we saw the whole film after it was finished, there’s a scene towards the end where Shah Rukh Khan looks at the Tiranga and tears roll down his eyes, that was a very important part… so, in that part there was a very good background score but Yash [Chopra] ji said, ‘There should be a song here.’”

He continued, “The film was just a week away from its release so that day itself, we watched the film and came back to our music studio, and we had a song which we had created for another film Dor which was Ek Taraf Teri Dhadkan Thi. Saansein Hai Teri Dooji Orr, Maula Mere Toote Na Ye Dor. But Nagesh [Kukunoor, director of Dor] didn’t like this song, he said it was too sad. He wanted a positive song.”

“So, we did ‘Ye Hausla Kaise Ye Hausala Kaise Jhuke, Ye Arazu Kaise Ruke.’” Salim shared as he sang the song. “He loved this song. It has something. This was written by Mir Ali Husain, Yeh Sir Hausalon Se Kaise Jhuke, Ye Dil Arazu..  [Nagesh told us to] Remove Sir and Dil, let’s keep ‘Ye Hausla Kaise Ye Hausala Kaise Jhuke, Ye Arazu Kaise Ruke’. So, this is the process of creating a song.”
